adprep

Overview

Prepares an existing Active Directory domain for the introduction of domain controllers running a later version of Windows

Usage Guide

adprep must be run on the domain before a server with a higher version of Windows is promoted to a domain controller. In domains that are being upgraded, it needs to be run on the first domain controller to be upgraded, prior to running the upgrade.

The process is:

  • Run adprep /forestprep on the schema operations master for the forest.
  • Run adprep /domainprep on the domain's infrastructure operations master.
  • Run adprep /domainprep /gpprep on each domain's infrastructure operations master.
  • run adprep /rodcprep from any computer.

the gpprep step does not need to be run for Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2 if it has previously been run in an upgrade to Windows 2003. The rodcprep step does not need to be run for Windows 2008 R2 if it has previously been run for Windows 2008.
